Primary 2 Lesson 7: The Birth of Jesus Christ Brought Joy to the Earth

*Lesson is from the LDS Primary 2 Manual, lesson 4. I have put it in a simpler easy-to-read outline form and made some alterations to fit how I’d like to teach.

Purpose: “To help each child feel the joy that Jesus Christ’s birth brought to the earth.”

Preparation:

Materials:

  • Bring magnets or masking/painters tape to hang each of the word stripes.
  • Pencils or other writing utensil for kids to write their names on word stripes.
  • Device to play Nativity scriptures story (I use my Ipad).  You may want to download the video clip before hand in case of internet issues.
  • “Who’s Your Hero? The Ultimate Collection: Volume 2”  picture book by David Bowman
  • Optional Extra Activity: crayons (or other coloring utensils), glue sticks and scissors

Lesson:

  • Review classroom expectations (if needed?)
  • Each child shares one thing about their week
  • Opening Prayer:
  • Introduction:
    • Tell the kids: “I am thinking of a special day” and that you’ll give them a clue. Raise your hand when you’ve guessed what day I’m thinking of.
    • Hum “Happy Birthday” song
    • Ask: “What special day am I thinking of?”
    • Ask: “What do you like best about your birthday?
    • Have the children say the name of each month as you make a timeline on the wall by hanging the month word strips.
    • Have each child write their name on one of the additional word strips
    • Let each child take a turn hanging their name under the month they were born on the year timeline you’ve created.
    • Ask: How do you think your parents felt when you were born?
    • “Remind the children that being born and receiving a physical body is an important part of Heavenly Father’s plan for us”.
  • Jesus Christ’s Birthday was a wonderful day
    • We are going to learn about the birth of a baby that people waited many years for.
    • Long ago the prophets said that one day a Savior would be born. He would make it possible for us to live with Heavenly Father again.
    • Ask: “Who was this baby?” (Jesus Christ)
    • Explain to the children that we are going to watch a video about the birth of Christ. This was a very special day. The prophets taught that Christ would come, but they didn’t know when so they just had to wait. This was a special day that some people looked forward to because they were taught that Christ would be born and would make it possible for them to live with Heavenly Father again someday.
    • Tell the children to imagine that they were children long ago, before the birth of Christ. They lived near the city of Bethlehem and were taught by their parents to look forward to the birth of the Savior. As you were out in the fields, helping your dad tend to the sheep, the night was quiet and peaceful. The stars were bright. An angel appeared to tell them the good news… that Christ was born. We learn about this in the Bible.
    • Ask: How do you think you would feel?
    • “We are going to watch a short movie about this special day.”
    • Show Video: https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/2010-11-06-chapter-5-jesus-christ-is-born?category=new-testament/new-testament-stories&&lang=eng
    • Tell the children that because of the Book of Mormon, we know people lived in Jerusalem, like the video, but also in the Americas. We are going to read about how this special day when Christ was born was for the people in the Americas.
    • Read story of those who awaited Christ’s birth in America using the Who’s Your Hero? book
  • Optional Extra Activity: Coloring page from the LDS Primary 2 Manual
    • Let each child color a copy of the  baby Jesus coloring page
    • Let the children (with your help, as needed) cut out the manger and baby Jesus
    • Using a glue stick, have the children add glue to the manger and attach the baby Jesus so he is laying in it.
  • Invitation: Tell your parents about the story of Baby Jesus’ birth and why it brought Joy to the people.
  • Closing Prayer:

Primary 2 Lesson 6: We Have Special Families

I will not be posting for this lesson because I will not be teaching it. I have a substitute arranged for this day. I’m sorry for the inconsistency lately! Hopefully it will be calming down soon!

Primary 2 Lesson 5: I Can Make Right Choices

Purpose: “To help each child understand that we can choose the right because Heavenly Father gave us agency.” Source: LDS Primary 2 manual https://www.lds.org/manual/primary-2/lesson-5?lang=eng

Preparation:

  • Print and copy enough of this color page for each class member. I will be printing page one of the handout from this awesome blog. It is the page that has four squares to draw pictures of ways/times we can choose the right. https://cknscratch.com/primary2/lesson-5-i-can-make-right-choices
  • a bowl of small items of different colors or variety such as small candies or stickers. I have old enough kids that I’m thinking Jolly Ranchers or a page of stickers that are different colors/shapes.
  • Optional: prepared game board

Materials:

  • Crayons
  • Soft object to pass around as they answer questions (such as a soft ball or stuffed animal… i prefer the ball because its washable and I’m a little bit of a germ-a-phobic lol)
  • optional: dice and game piece markers for each child

Lesson:

  • Review Class Expectations (class helped make list made a few weeks ago)
  • Optional, as needed: Behavior… start start chart or tic tac toe (stickers for reward – I just tell them its a surprise)
  • Let each child share one thing about their week
  • Opening Prayer:
  • Attention Activity
    • Show the bowl of small items that you brought. Pass the bowl around and let each child choose one.
    • Explain that they each made a choice. We make choices everyday.
    • Ask: What are choices they’ve made today? (What to wear, what to eat, to come to church or stay home, what to do with their time before church, to be reverent in sacrament meeting/primary, to sing or not sing in primary).
    • Explain that “making choices is a very important part of life on Earth. Some choices are easy and some choices are hard. Our right to choose was given to us when we lived in heaven with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
  • Connect/Reminder of last week’s lesson:
    • Review last week’s lesson. See what the children can re-tell to you, filling in “holes” to the story or telling it yourself as needed. I’d use questions to guide them in teaching… (pass around a soft object as they answer questions. Keeps my kids attention better.
      • Where did we live before this life?
      • Why did we come to Earth?
      • Who were the two people that told Heavenly Father they would come here and help us?
      • What did Jesus Christ offer to do when he came here? (Be an example but let us make our own choices. Give the glory to Heavenly Father).
      • What did Lucifer/Satan offer to do if he came to Earth to help us?
      • What plan did we all choose?
      • What did Jesus want to do to help us choose the right?
    • Explain Heavenly Father knew it would be best for us to choose for ourselves because we could learn to make right choices.
    • “Lucifer/Satan and his followers are still fighting Heavenly Father’s plan.” They use our agency, or ability to choose, to try and get us to choose to follow them instead of Heavenly Father and Jesus.
    • Hold up or draw on the board “CTR”.
    • Ask: What did Jesus want to do to help us choose the right? (Come to Earth to teach us what is right to help us know what choices to make. He lived a perfect example too, and have stories of his life written in the scriptures so we can learn from his example.)
  • We Can ALL choose the Right
    • * If my kids are getting very wiggly at this point (that is a lot of talking, listening, discussion above!) then we will take a small bathroom break here or I will choose to read the following story WHILE they work on the coloring activity. That will hopefully maintain reverence and give them a chance to wiggle!
    • Read the following story from the LDS Primary 2 Manual, lesson 5. It is in the last section of the lesson, just before the summary, about Brittany.
  • Coloring Activity:
    • Give each child a copy of the ‘color’ page.
    • Have the children draw/color in the 4 different squares with ways they can choose the right.
  • Scripture Example of how Children Can Choose the Right
    • Explain that some priests did not believe that Jesus Christ was the Savior who Heavenly Father had sent to save them. They tried to find something he did wrong so they could have Him killed. (Matthew 21:14-16)
    • Jesus healed the blind and lame people in the temple and the chief priests became angry. The children praised Jesus and this made them more mad. The chief priests wanted Jesus to stop them from praising. He reminded them that the scriptures say the children will praise Him.
    • Just like the children in the story, children can choose to follow and praise Jesus. We can all choose for ourselves… choose the right… even as children.
  • Optional Activities: Two games to choose from
  • Invitation:
  • Closing Prayer:
