*General text, outline, and stories are from the LDS Primary 2 lesson manual, lesson 2, but have been tweaked by me to put in a better outline format and to alter according to my teaching style and needs of my class.

Purpose: “To increase each child’s desire to be baptized and to give the children an understanding of how to prepare for baptism”

Preparation:

Materials:

  • Picture 2-19 John the Baptist Baptizing Jesus and a paper or cloth to cover it up
  • Picture 2-20 Boy Being Baptized (optional)
  • Ipad or other device to watch LDS Bible video
  • Dice and place markers for each child (I use buttons of various colors).
  • Optional Activity: Blank paper for each child and crayons

Lesson:

  • Have children update their Star chart for Sharing Time reverence.
  • Each child shares one thing about the week.
  • Opening Prayer:
  • Attention/Introduction:
    • “Display the covered picture of John the Baptist baptizing Jesus. Tell the children that the picture underneath the paper is of two important people. Ask the children to try to guess who the people are, but tell them not to say anything out loud until the whole picture can be seen. Ask each child to remove a piece of paper from the covered picture, one at a time.”

      • Ask: Who are the people in the picture?

      • Ask: What are they doing?

  • Jesus Christ was baptized:
    • Watch Video https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/2011-10-024-the-baptism-of-jesus?lang=eng
    • John was surprised when Jesus asked to be baptized because he knew Jesus had never sinned. Jesus explained that because Heavenly Father had commanded us to be baptized, He wanted/needed to do it too.
    • Explain that we are baptized by immersion – we are fully covered by the water.
    • Guessing Game: Read the sentence and let the kids guess the missing word/s:
      • Jesus Christ was baptized by ____________ (John the Baptist)
      • Jesus was baptized in the river ________ (Jordan)
      • Jesus was baptized to obey Heavenly Father’s ________( commandment/teaching).
      • When Jesus was baptized, he was completely covered by ______ (water)
      • After Jesus was baptized, he and John heard the voice of ________  (Heavenly Father).
      • When we are eight years old, we can follow the example of Jesus and be __________ (baptized).
  • We Can Follow Jesus Christ’s Example by Being Baptized:
    • We can be baptized when we are 8 years old. When we are baptized, we make covenants, or promises, with Heavenly Father. “We promise to obey his commandments, forgive others, and follow Jesus Christ. In return, he accepts us into the Church and promises to guide and help us.”
    • Explain what their baptism might look like: that they will be baptized by a priesthood holder such as their dad, grandpa, or brother, or another priesthood holder they would like to ask. They will go in the font (like a giant bath tub or small pool) at the church wearing all white. The priesthood holder will say a special baptism prayer and immerse you, for just a moment, completely in the water. Then you’ll be able to change.
    • Ask the children what questions they have about when they will be baptized?
  • Activity: Keeping Our Baptismal Covenant Board Game
    • Play the board game (I skipped the puzzle aspect) as a class, with each child getting their own place marker and rotating turns. As you play, read the text that you land on. Discuss how we can prepare for baptism and keep our covenants afterwards.
  • We Can Prepare Now for Baptism:
    • Remind the children that we can prepare for baptism now.
    • Lay out and discuss “steps to baptism” (footprints)
      • Start out on the classroom side, opposite of the picture of Jesus being baptized (or use picture 2-20 Boy Being Baptized)
      • Lay down each of the steps and discuss it with the class, asking questions. Begin with the symbol/picture of each step first, if you’d like. Have class members help lay each step down, until they have crossed the room and used all the footprints to reach the baptismal picture across the room.
        • Believe in and learn about Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father.
          • Why should we learn about Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father?
          • Where can we learn about them?
        • Pray to Heavenly Father.
          • How can praying help us be ready for baptism?
        • Be forgiving and love others.
          • What happens when we forgive?
          • How can we show our love for others?
        • Choose the right every day.
          • What are some ways we can choose the right?
        • Read or to scripture stories.
          • How has studying the scriptures helped you?
        • Be eight years old.
          • What can you do before you are eight years old to prepare for baptism?
    • Let the children take turns crossing the room to the picture, standing on each of the footprints,  and saying what steps they can take to prepare for baptism.
  • Optional Extras: Ideas in case you have extra time or need a little “break” for the kids
  • Bear Testimony of Baptism:
  • Invitation:
  • Closing Prayer:
